English Essay: Type of parent-child relationship that is most likely to produce the best results

Diana Baurnrind believes parents interact with their children in one of three basic ways, that is, authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive. Authoritarian parenting expects the child to follow the parent's directions and to respect work and effort. The authoritarian parent strictly limits and controls the child and does not allow any discussion. For example, when there is a difference in opinion as to how to do something, the authoritarian parent might say, " You do it my way or else..." Children of authoritarian parents are often anxious about being compared to others, lack initiative and have poor communication skills. Authoritative parenting encourages children to be independent but still limits and controls their behaviour. A lot of verbal give-and-take is allowed and parents are supportive and warm towards the child. An authoritative parent might put his arm around the child in a comforting way and say, "You know you should not have done that; let's t...

English Essay: What's all this about stress?

The Human Function Curve demonstrates that the need for increased performance is proportionate to an appropriate degree of pressure within the individual. Sufficient stress causes a state of healthy tension and helps us to perform well. Stress is needed to help us function well in life. Too little stress and we are laid back to the extent that we are in the rustout zone. Too much and we are heading for exhaustion and possible illness, because there is a point on this curve at which the smallest added pressure can trigger a physical or mental breakdown. What we really need is just enough to keep us on our toes and in a state of healthy tension, somewhere in the middle of the graph. Good stress motivates you to achieve success, and is the driving force in most of our lives. It is also the salt and spice of life and to have no stress we would have to be dead. It makes life interesting and enjoyable and motivates us. In fact, people often create stress for themselves, setting themselves...

English Essay: Compare Human Friendship With That of A Computer's

The ideal companion machine would not only look, feel and sound friendly but would also be programmed to behave in a congenial manner. Those qualities that make interaction with other people enjoyable would be simulated as closely as possible, and the machine would appear to be charming, stimulating, and easygoing. Its informal conversational style would make interaction comfortable, and yet the machine would remain slightly unpredictable and therefore interesting. In its first encounter it might be somewhat hesitant and unassuming, but as it came to know the user it would progress to a more relaxed and intimate style. The machine would not be a passive participant but would add its own suggestions, information, and opinions; it would sometimes take the initiative in developing and changing the topic and would have a personality of its own. Friendships are not made in a day, and the computer would be more acceptable as a friend if it simulated the gradual changes that occur when one ...

Short Essay: Speaking fear

One of the major concerns of students in any speech class is stage fright. Many people who converse easily in all kinds of everyday situations become frightened at the idea of standing up before a group to deliver a speech. If you are worried about stage fright, you may feel better knowing you are not alone. A survey asked 2500 Americans to list their deepest fears. To the surprise of the researchers, the largest number of people listed speaking before a group among their greatest fears. Actually, most people tend to be anxious about doing anything important in public. It is perfectly normal to be nervous at the start of a speech. The point is: Control your anxiety and make it work for you rather than against you.

English Essay: Children of today are too pampered

It is an undeniable fact that children today are a lucky lot compared to their counterpart a decade on to ago. This is mainly due to the facts that parents today are more educated and holding better jobs. Modern parents usually opt for smaller family size. Hence, the number of children in each family is usually small. Consequently, parents, rightly or wrongly, tend to shower their children with excessive love to the extent of overprotecting them. Unfortunately, children are sometimes deprived of the opportunities to socialise with their peers for the fear that they may be in the wrong company. Teachers in school for example, are in constant fear of being challenges by over-protective parents for taking action against their charges. However, once children are overprotected, there is concern that they are either spoilt or will fail to learn to be independent. Having to face the reality outside once the artificial protection is dismantled one day will be hard for the children. Today, as p...

English Esssay: How to prepare for an interview

The preparations of both the interviewer and the interviewee have the same starting point - an examination of what the job requires for successful performance. To find out how well the candidate fulfills these requirements will be the main goal of the interview. Thinking this goal out is a stage that is frequently neglected by organisations. Candidates are all the more advised, therefore, to accumulate as much information as possible about the job. It can be useful to call the company and mention your interest in the job and your name as you probe for further details. Job descriptions in advertisements rarely provide anything more than an attractive introduction. Better still, arrange a visit, if the company agrees, so that you can gather the information you want and make an early impression. Prepare your portfolio early, not when you are under pressure of time and circumstance on the day. By being well prepared, you tilt the circumstances to an important degree in your favour. The app...

English Essay: How to be better in workplace

For many people, starting work can be both an exciting and a daunting experience. To survive in today's workplace scenario, there are a few golden rules that can help one manage better. The first and most important rule is that one must be willing to learn and keep abreast with the latest developments and technology. In this age of information and knowledge, many positions demand computer literacy. Statistics in US show that since 1984 the number of jobs that require such literacy has risen from 25% to 46%. It is not difficult to achieve a minimal computer literacy as long as one is not prompted by fear to learn. Kris Jamsa - the author of "Welcome to Personal Computers" points out that one can become as computer proficient as most of the population by just mastering the following 3 tasks: saving and printing a document, sending and receiving an email, and browsing the World Wide Web. Besides keeping up with the latest technology, you must also keep up with the latest new...

English Essay: National Service Program (NSP)

The NSP which was first introduced in 2004 has one noble objective, namely to promote understanding, integration and unity among the young participants of the different races in this country. Thus I strongly disagree with the above statement "NS trainees should be trained to use firearms as part of the NS Training Program". Undeniably, the 3-month training period is definitely too short to train our young trainees to use firearms effectively. In countries where NS is compulsory, a trainee has to undergo at least one and a half years of tough training. Ideally, our NSP should focus on other major objective rather than the tough military training. Personally speaking, NSP brings forth lots of other benefits to the young trainees. Firstly, when youths are separated from their over-protective parents, they are left to fend for themselves. They learn to be independent and disciplined, get along with other ppl, do their daily chores and the list goes on. Admittedly, computer ...

Med Year 1: Cholinergic receptors

ACh is synthesised within the cholinergic nerve endings. First, acteyl coenzyme A is produced from acetate and coenzyme A during pyruvate decarboxylation. Cholinomimetic drugs can be classified into direct-acting cholinergic agonists and indirect-acting anticholinesterases. Cholinergic agonists are either choline esters (methacholine) or alkaloids (pilocarpine). Anticholinesterases can act reversibly or irreversibly on cholinesterase. There are 2 types of cholinergic receptors: nicotinic and muscarinic. Nn - ganglia, CNS Nm - smooth ms M1 -ganglia, CNS M2 - heart M3 - bronchi, eye, glands, GIT, bladder Regulation of receptors: Receptors exist in a dynamic state, their density and efficacy is subjected to regulation by the feedback from their own signal output and other physiopathological influences. Prolonged deprivation of the agonist by continued use of an antagonist results in supersensitivity of the receptor to the agonist. The mechanisms involved may be (1) unmask...

English Essay: The Art of Conversation

It is natural to feel nervous in a new situation. Walking into a room full of people without knowing a soul can be a daunting task, but it is important to realize that almost everyone is nervous when facing a room full of strangers. The approach of the first dsy at new school or a party where you wont know anyone can be made easier if you know what to do. Developing a bag of tricks can help get you through some of those tough situations. To begin set a goal for yourself. For example, you can decide that at the end of this school day, or by the end of this party, you will have spoken to at least 3 new people or will have had a conversation with at least one new person. Remember, these dont have to be make-it-or break-it conversations. Simple exchanges of a few remarks will suffice. Now, how do you get started? Just walking into a room full of strangers is intimidating for most people. In fact, most people feel off-balance entering a room where everyone is talking a mile a mimute or ...

Short Essay: Feeding The Mind

Eating well is important for our physical well being. Likewise feeding the mind is important for our mental health. It has been suggested that nourishing our mind with good, clean information can help us to develop a healthy atitude that is essential for a happy and successful life. A healthy attitude helps to build a person's optimism in life. Research has shown that the mind can be conditioned successfully to instinctively react positively to negative situations. How does one nourish one's mind to react in shch a manner? Listening to recordings of inspirational messages is one such way. You can do this while carrying out some mundane activities like driving or doing domestic chores. Another suggested activity is to read. However, it is important that you read good literature. For successful reading to take place, ensure that the books are easily accessible. In addition, create a comfortable reading are whe you can read quietly without interruption.

Short Essay: Effects of Pirated Products on Local Entertainment Industry

Last year the local entertainment industry lost an estimatd 60% of its total profits due to the production and sale of pirated products. As a result, the industry launched a nationwide campaign to stop the sale of these products. With the help of the relevant government agencies like the police department and local council enforcement officets, it began the campaign with an appeal for cooperation from the public not to purchase these pirated compact discs so as to force the vendors out of business. At present, there are no laws to stop the public from buying pirated products and the best approach therefore is to educated them on the negative repercussions on the entertainment industry. Jowever, there sre laws to stop the profuction and sale of unlicensed products, but the authorities find it very difficult to put an end to these illegal activities. Often, the vendors manage to slip away during raids. In addition, producers have begun to produce pirated compact discs in private homes an...

English Essay: The Uses and Abuses of Advertisements

Advertisers promote their products to influence teenagers into buying expensive branded items, drinking sweetened carbonated drinks and eating junk food. A glance at any newspaper will reveal hundreds of advertisements. Some are elaborate full-page displays while the majority are in the more economical classified sections. People and firms advertise for all sorts of reasons. We can read about job vacancies, new products, people wanting to sell or purchase houses and cars, announcements of births and deaths, lonely hears looking for partners, home services and others. Th e list goes on, and expanding everyday. The uses of advertisements are indisputable. Large companies depend heavily on advertisements to make their products known to the consumers. These companies play a major role in the development of sports in our country. Without them acting as sponsors we would not be able to stage international sporting events. Most magazines and periodicals survive because of advertis...

Environment plays a major role in developing a person's intelligence

It is a fact that there are multiple factors that affect a person's intelligent. This is evident every year when results of the public examinations are announced, the country's high achievers generally would cite a combination of factors that contribute to their success. Rarely do we come across students who are never put in much effort but could emerge as the country's top scorers. Personally speaking, I strongly agree that environment plays a major role in developing a person's intelligence. Take for example, a conducive school environment certainly helps motivate a person's quest for more knowledge. It is essential that school provide sufficient facilities, dedicated teaching staff and a peaceful learning atmosphere. Additionally, encouragement received from peers in school is crucial too. If a school is devoid of the above mentioned environment, acquiring the knowledge will be an uphill task. Undeniably, the mass media, too, play a certain role in instilling...

Excel A-Level Biochemistry: Enzyme inhibition

Inhibitors are molecules that interact in some way with the enzyme to prevent it from working in its normal manner. There are a variety of types of inhibitors including: nonspecific, irreversible, reversible -- competitive and noncompetitive. Michaelis-Menten Graphs It is a plot made to record the initial velocity of an enzyme catalyzed reaction based on varying and increasing concentrations of substrate with a fixed quantity of enzyme. Only the initial rate is observed because if any other time point were observed there would be reverse reactions (since the reaction is typically on equilibrium). If we have no substrate present, then there will be no reaction, so at [S] = 0, the rate will be 0. Adding substrate to the vessel will increase the amount of substrate binding to the enzyme and thus the reaction rate will increase. If we keep adding substrate, however, there will come a point when all the enzymes are working as fast as they can and are essentially saturated, therefore...

Excel A-Level Biology: Structure of cell membrane

Phospholipids are the major class of membrane lipids. A phospholipid molecule is constructed from 4 components: one or more fatty acids, provide a hydrophic barrier  a plaform to which the fatty acids are attached  a phosphate  an alcohol, attached to the phosphate  hydrophilic properties that enable interaction with aqueous environment.       ✬The platform on which phospholipids are built may be glycerol (3-C alcohol) or sphingosine (a more complex alcohol) Phosphoglyceride consists of a glycerol backbone to which are attached 2 fatty acid chains and a phosphorylated alcohol. The hydroxyl group of the glycerol backbone is esterified to phosphoric acid. When no further additions are made, the resulting compound is phosphatidate (diacylglycerol 3-phosphate) -- the simplest phosphoglyceride. The major phosphoglycerides are derived from phosphatidate by the formation of an ester bond between the phosphate group of phosphatidate and t...
