English Essay: National Service Program (NSP)

The NSP which was first introduced in 2004 has one noble objective, namely to promote understanding, integration and unity among the young participants of the different races in this country. Thus I strongly disagree with the above statement "NS trainees should be trained to use firearms as part of the NS Training Program".

Undeniably, the 3-month training period is definitely too short to train our young trainees to use firearms effectively. In countries where NS is compulsory, a trainee has to undergo at least one and a half years of tough training. Ideally, our NSP should focus on other major objective rather than the tough military training.

Personally speaking, NSP brings forth lots of other benefits to the young trainees. Firstly, when youths are separated from their over-protective parents, they are left to fend for themselves. They learn to be independent and disciplined, get along with other ppl, do their daily chores and the list goes on.

Admittedly, computer games, internet, television program, to name a few distract many of our youths from being active physically. The lack of regular physical exercise has given rise to the problem of obesity among our youths who are considered the asset and future leaders of the nation. Obviously, NSP is handy to get these ppl moving. Furthermore, these trainees, being energetic and at their prime, have sth constructive to do while awaiting their SPM results. In a way, this program helps to curtail some undesirable social ills among our youths. More importantly. these young trainees will emerge more confident at the end of the training. As they are the most valuable asset of the country it is important to inculcate positive values in them during the training.

On a more serious note, Malaysia has come a long way since independence through racial cooperation and harmony. Evidently, the country has achieved much and progressed by leaps and bounds. However, the problem of racial polarization in Malaysia today is real. It is not hard to notice the different races in this country hardly interact with each other. This phenomenon is detrimental to the future development of the Malaysia which is celebrating 50th years of independence. We need to beware that a small spark can bring the country to its knees.

Through NSP the government is hoping that the young trainees will make use of the 3-month training period to make new friends of all races and religions. The strong bond of friendship among trainees of various races will help to promote understanding, national unity and patriotism among them. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this program will help our youths to grow up as productive citizens of strong character and sound values. As they will soon be the frontliners in realizing the country's goal of achieving the vision 2020.
