Environment plays a major role in developing a person's intelligence

It is a fact that there are multiple factors that affect a person's intelligent. This is evident every year when results of the public examinations are announced, the country's high achievers generally would cite a combination of factors that contribute to their success. Rarely do we come across students who are never put in much effort but could emerge as the country's top scorers.

Personally speaking, I strongly agree that environment plays a major role in developing a person's intelligence. Take for example, a conducive school environment certainly helps motivate a person's quest for more knowledge. It is essential that school provide sufficient facilities, dedicated teaching staff and a peaceful learning atmosphere. Additionally, encouragement received from peers in school is crucial too. If a school is devoid of the above mentioned environment, acquiring the knowledge will be an uphill task.

Undeniably, the mass media, too, play a certain role in instilling good reading habit among members of a society. Unfortunately, the mass media often treat money making as their priority. In so doing, the glorify negative values that corrupt young readers' mind. TV programs, tabloids, magazines and the internet are often used to promote yellow culture and violence. Thus, young people's mind is easily influenced and morally affected at a young age. Research has shown that, children generally have a low concentration level and are often poor readers in school if they are constantly exposed to unhealthy material and the idiot box at home.

By far, the most crucial factor that helps develop a person's intelligence is none other than the family environment. As responsible individual, parents should ensure that basic needs such as proper food, guidance and a conducive living environment are provided so that children have peace of mind to concentrate on their schoolwork and studies. Parents must never allow themselves to be obsessed by the craze for material gains. Instead, they should, by all means, juggle their time between their busy schedule and spending more quality time with their adolescents. It is important to recognise that one of the most valuable gifts parents can give their children is their time, not expensive consumer products. Otherwise, it is very likely that children turn to the wrong companions to while away their hours.

New research in Britain revealed that parents who make time to read regularly with their children and take ac active ole in their upbringing play a vital role in their academic success. Additionally, close parental supervision at an early age also helps to improve children's mental health. Generally, given the right home environment a person's intelligence can being greatly, if not fully, developed.

In conclusion, though genetics, economic and cultural factors are said to influence a person's intelligence, factors such as the ones mentioned above are certainly more influential.
