English Essay: Children of today are too pampered

It is an undeniable fact that children today are a lucky lot compared to their counterpart a decade on to ago. This is mainly due to the facts that parents today are more educated and holding better jobs. Modern parents usually opt for smaller family size. Hence, the number of children in each family is usually small. Consequently, parents, rightly or wrongly, tend to shower their children with excessive love to the extent of overprotecting them. Unfortunately, children are sometimes deprived of the opportunities to socialise with their peers for the fear that they may be in the wrong company. Teachers in school for example, are in constant fear of being challenges by over-protective parents for taking action against their charges. However, once children are overprotected, there is concern that they are either spoilt or will fail to learn to be independent. Having to face the reality outside once the artificial protection is dismantled one day will be hard for the children.

Today, as parents are more affluent, they can afford to give more pocket allowances to their children. With the extra money, children are able to possess many kinds of gadgets that were unheard of a decade ago. Play stations, computers and handsets are some of the common gadgets owed by the young generation today. Shopping arcades, fast food outlets, cyber cafes, video games centers and partying have become a trend among today's younger generation. However, we are certainly more concerned about children who constantly misuse their pocket allowances on gambiling, smoking and other vice activities.

In the name of convenience, many teenagers are proud owners of motorcycles and cars today. This phenomenon signifies that society is moving forward at a fast pace. Waiting for public buses will soon be a thing of the past. As long as teenagers don't misuse or abuse their vehicles, being owners of motorcycles and cars is fine. However, they should learn to cherish and appreciate this modern form of convenience. Getting involved in illegal racing is of utmost stupidity.

Lastly, with a higher disposable income, many households today can afford the services of foreign maids. Subsequently, the need for children to get involved in household chores is greatly reduced. Not surprisingly, children of today find it hard to cook a decent meal for themselves.

It is everyone concern that when children are excessive pampered, they might not learn the necessary skills to become independent. Therefore, parents should, by all means, trian their children to be more responsible, independent and morally upright besides showering them with excessive love.
